The Monopoly Dataset:
Background
What is the Monopoly dataset?
The Monopoly dataset is a Stata (version 18) data file. In the file there is a record for each stage of real estate development for each property card in the Monopoly (US 65th Edition) game.

Why do I need the Monopoly dataset?
This is the only dataset used in all the examples in Multilevel Model Foundations. You want to run the available Stata programs using this dataset to fully understand the examples and results presented.

Is the Monopoly dataset password protected?
Yes

Why?
Because the current owners of the game, Hasbro, required this when I requested their permission to use these data in this book.

Where do I find the password?
You will find it on the page with acronyms and abbreviations at the front of the book.

Could I build my own Monopoly dataset?
Certainly. If you have access to the property deeds for Monopoly (US 65th edition), you can enter these data yourself. But, before you do this, read Chapters 2 & 3 carefully. Pay close attention to Figure 2.2 and Table 3.1. Be sure to use the exact same variable names and coding. Most importantly, when you are done, be sure your descriptive statistics exactly match those appearing in Table 3.1

Steps for Getting and Opening
How do I download the dataset?
Click on the link below.
It should download a zip file containing the dataset to your computer.
Phone

Can I download this on my phone?
Yes.
Her are the steps for a current day (circa 2023-2024) Android phone
1. Click on link above.
2. Tap "Save to downloads" on your phone.
3. Put a checkmark for the file "monopo...ginal.dta"
4. Tap "Extract"
5. "Extract file" comes up with the name of the zip file "Monopooly_data_password_protected.zip" Tap "Extract"
6. Enter the password.
7. Then tap "Extract."
8. It will then ask for an app to open the file. You do not have Stata on your phone, but you have the data file and can transfer it as an attachment to your computer.

Windows PC

I use a Windows PC. What do I need to open the password protected data file?
You need a program that can handle password protected zip files. I recommend 7-Zip. It is free as of this writing.
You also will need a version of the statistical analysis program Stata, version 18 or later. You can rent the software, or buy it. Go to https://www.stata.com/order/dl/

On a Windows PC follow these steps to extract the data file
1.If you do not have 7-zip aleady installed: Paste the url below into your browser:

Download and install the program.

2. Find the data file you just downloaded. It is a zip file and will end in .zip.

3. Right click on the zip file.

4. Select the 7-zip option.

5. You will then see a screen that looks like this:

6. Enter the password into the password box. Remember, each word is capitalized and there are no spaces between words.

7. Note that the extracted data file will be in a subdirectory (sub-folder) of the directory (folder) where you downloaded the zip file. Go there.
That subdirectory will be named: monopoly_data_password_protected.
If you have done this multiple times there may be a number (e.g., 3) at the end of the subdirectory name.

For example, I downloaded the zip file to my Downloads folder (C:\Users\rbrecken\Downloads\) so the location where 7-zip placed the file was:

C:\Users\rbrecken\Downloads\monopoly_data_password_protected(3)

8. The file name is:

monopoly_original.dta

9. Double click on it and open it in Stata.
